Hi-Tech Tools To Tackle Cyber Crimes

Special digital computation methods to simulate the equivalent of a fingerprint in the analysis of cyber-crime are set to augment the quality of investigation into a variety of cyber-related offences, with the roll-out of indigenous software tools developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Thiruvananthapuram.

The tools will shortly be put into application by the National Police Academy, Hyderabad, which is giving final touches to a manual of standardized procedures for seizure, acquisition and analysis of digital evidence that would stand the test of scrutiny in a court of law.

C-DAC has pieced together the new versions of its software tools, "TRUEBACK'' and "CYBERCHECK,'' which would help investigators of cyber offences to seize as well as analyse digital evidence from a scene of crime, which could range from hacking of a security system to faking of currency. Each phase of the project is being overseen by a high-power steering committee of experts from across the country.

The development of a standardized procedure is also expected to pave the way for greater inter-agency collaboration in dealing with cyber-crimes among institutions such as the National Police Academy, the Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore, the CBI, State Police departments and the Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratories.

With these software tools it is possible to retrieve documents, pictures, deleted or partially deleted information from the computer system. An exact replica (often more than one copy) of the media storage on the computer, which represents essential digital evidence, is extracted on a similar storage media such as hard disks, floppy and compact discs.
